The Deathbed Calendar: Reclaiming Time in Real Estate
In real estate, it’s easy to feel like time isn’t yours. Calls at 10 p.m., last-minute client requests, endless fires to put out—our profession thrives on unpredictability. But if you’re not careful, that chaos can steal the life you’re working so hard to build.
That’s why I want to share a concept that changed everything for me: the “deathbed mentality,” from Robin Sharma’s The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. The idea is simple—if you lived each day as if it were your last, you’d stop wasting time on things that don’t matter.
For me, this isn’t about skydiving every morning or blowing my savings on sushi and champagne. It’s about making sure my calendar reflects my values—not just my obligations.
If it’s not on my calendar, it doesn’t exist. I block everything that matters—business development, workouts, golf practice, family breakfasts, even downtime. My Sunday “Day Off” is sacred. Tools like Calendly make it easy for others to book with me, but my boundaries are non-negotiable.
Here’s the truth: the more I honored my time, the more others did too. I became more productive—not by working more, but by working on the right things at the right time.
If you’re ready to take back control, here’s where to start:
Track your time for a week—just observe how you spend it.
Time block your highest-value tasks during your peak hours.
Block your life, not just your work—meals, hobbies, rest, connection.
Journal daily—set 3 priorities in the morning, reflect on 3 wins at night.
Be fully present—when you’re in a task, be in that task.
At the end of your life, you won’t wish you had sent more emails or squeezed in another showing. You’ll wish you had shown up more—for your family, your passions, your health, and yourself.
Your calendar is your life’s blueprint. Own it like your life depends on it—because it does.
